Can A Phone Charger Be Used To Charge The Contour Roam 3 Camera

It is 1 of the drawbacks of the Roam when compared to the Plus which allows admission to the USB port without having to open upwardly the back.
Also deport in mind Contour, in their infinite wisdom, do non have a standard USB connector, it is wired in such a way that a special USB cablevision is required to charge and tape at the same fourth dimension.

Ah, thanks for the tip about the special cable/plug required, I had assumed it was just a regular mini or micro USB connector.

The Profile Plus is much more expensive. Mayhap there is some other more suitable camera for me. My requirements are:
1. Similar movie quality to Contour Roam
ii. Able to log pictures at one 2nd intervals
3. Replaceable bombardment, tin can be run on AA cells, can final a whole day on one charge, or tin can exist charged on the fly

I've seen a workaround on youtube for 'correcting' the wiring of a standard USB cablevision to suit the Profile. All at your own risk, obviously.

I have ran a Contour Plus and a GoPro 2 for more than 8 hours using an external bombardment. The problem with the GoPro is that you need to use the skeleton case to gain admission to the USB port which means it cannot exist used when it is wet. The Sony has the same limitation, waterproof case prevents access to the USB port.
You could buy 1 of those bullet cameras with a separate recording unit of measurement which can exist placed somewhere away from h2o, which can be externally powered via the USB while recording, not sure if they do fourth dimension lapse recording though, just with a large memory card and a lower quality setting information technology will tape over viii hours on ane card.
Perhaps someone with another type of camera, that does no require a separate waterproof example, may reply about whether theirs is suitable.

Thanks for that. How did you lot power the Profile Plus externally? Is the not-camera finish of the charging pb a standard USB plug? Do yous have a web link for the external power supply you used?

Also, is it the case that the Contour Roam would be OK with its dorsum off as long as it didn't outset raining, or would there exist other problems with having the back off all day?

Hmmmm. That wouldn't be too much trouble. I have a soldering iron, some rut compress tubing, and I know how to utilise them.

Contour sell a machine charger which has the correctly wired USB connection, I merely removed the cigarette lighter adaptor putting a more useful connector on it. I used some 9800mAh 12V king of beasts batteries I bought from China.

Has anyone tried this? According to the Contour website it's possible. Would I take to remove the back? And wouldn't that mean losing the water resistance while it was plugged into a ability source? Could I but use a USB powerpack powered by dry out cells, equally sold for mobile phone charging abroad from wall sockets and auto lighter sockets?

I'm thinking that I'd like to log pictures at 1 2nd intervals on some long rides, so I demand battery life way beyond the three hours quoted by Profile.

The mini B USB connector wiring is + (Pins i and 4), - (pivot five). Use but 5VDC on this connector as the Contour will convert it to whatever voltage it needs.
The contour wiring ties (pin 4 to pin i) and thats what makes the contour different. Most USB connectors have power on pins ane+ and 5-.
I fabricated a wooden block same size as the li-on battery and put 3 small brass nails to match the aforementioned spacing of the bombardment terminals. Yous need to connect a 100K ohm resistor betwixt the middle pivot to the ground (-) pin to simulate the thermistor inside the battery. If the heart pin is left open up the contour will not turn on because it thinks the bombardment is besides hot. I tried to dismantle an sometime battery merely the plastic header is multilayer and impossible to solder to. I ordered single 18650 3000mah Ultrafire li-on batteries from People's republic of china and I put it in a one jail cell bombardment holder. Y'all can put four of them in parallel merely need to become a holder that holds the longer protected cells. I cycle long days and one 18650 cell volition work 6 hours for me. If you put many cells together in a pack it tin be a fire risk if you crash. Make sure the voltage is 3.7V for the four batteries in parallel or your will fry the contour! Hope that helps, John B
