Facebook's TimelineFacebook engagement layout offers a number of handy features that can be used to make your not-for-profit's Facebook Page more engaging.

Pinned posts make it easier to draw attention to specific posts on your Facebook Page. Even better, by using pinned posts, you can potentially increase the number of people who see your not-for-profit's future Facebook posts.

What is a pinned post?

When you "pin" a post on your Facebook Timeline, it will stay at the top-left of your timeline for 7 days. After 7 days, it returns to its proper position in your Timeline.

This means it will be the first post that people see when they visit your not-for-profit's Facebook Page.

Pinned posts have an orange flag at the top-right of the post so that people know it has been pinned.

Note: you can only pin posts that your Page has created and not posts on your Timeline by others.

Why should my not-for-profit use pinned posts?

Pinned posts allow you to draw attention to a certain piece of content for up to a week. You can pin just about anything related to your page (e.g. important event or announcement) but it's also important to make it a highly-engaging post for anyone who visits your Facebook Page.

Be seen by more people who like your Facebook Page with pinned posts

Facebook determines what is seen in people's news feeds, meaning not everyone will see your posts. One of the key factors to this is how much a person engages with your page (e.g. are they clicking links, sharing, commenting, liking etc?).

By pinning a highly engaging post at the top of your Facebook Page gives you the best chance of someone interacting with your content – and increasing the likelihood of your future posts to show in their news feed.

What posts should we pin?

The easy answer would probably be cats… but it's also important to think about the people coming to your page.

  • Use your Facebook Insights to see what your community has interacted with well in the past.
  • Remember that this may be the first thing someone sees who may not know what you do, so pick something that relates to your organisation.
  • An image post with a link in the description adds another level of engagement (e.g. liking/sharing/commenting on the photo but also the possibility of clicking on the link). For more info on using images on Facebook, see our article, "How to make posting images on Facebook work for you"

How do I pin a post?

Pinning a post is simple. After you have made the post:

  • Click the pencil icon in the upper-right corner of your Page's post
  • Select Pin to Top
